New Awakenings

Xira-15 was first resurrected as a Guardian by her Ghost, who she came to call "Little Brother" as she considered Exos and Ghosts to be similar in spirit, in the toppled ruins of Old Chicago. There, she immediately set out in search of various tools of survival, crafting herself a hideout within a warehouse, which later doubled as a hangar, battling against Fallen raiders in her search for scrap metal in the process. In 4 years, she had managed to build herself a Sparrow, as well as repair most of an old Arcadia-Class Jumpship.

Phoenix Rising

Xira first begins her Guardian career in the ruins of Old Chicago, where she helps the Hunter Spectre-7 complete a bounty on an Archon from the House of Devils. Unbeknownst to the two of them, another figure watches them from above before disappearing in a flash of blue light. She makes her way to the Last City, where she trains and hones her abilities as a Voidwalker, along with developing a mentor-mentee relationship with the Speaker. Xira also remains close to Spectre during this time, although the Hunter is much less welcoming of the idea.

Twenty years after her first journey to the City, Xira returns from a scavenging mission at the Vanguard's request to look into increasing activity around the Cosmodrome in Old Russia alongside the Titan Nick Ortiz. In the Cosmodrome, Xira investigates the Lunar Complex of the Skywatch, while Nick explores the Terrestrial Complex. While there, she finds proof of Hive activity on the surface of Earth connected to the Hive sect within the Moon. She and Nick also reactivate the old Skywatch array in order to reach Rasputin, whose systems have evidently survived the first SIVA Crisis, and report back to the Vanguard with their findings. While Nick deals with the House of Devils, Xira is tasked by the Speaker to look further into the Hive situation.

While on the Moon searching for a lead, she runs into a lone Guardian already there, who's initially hostile and distrusting towards her. When they both receive a distress call from a Ghost, however, the Hunter reveals her name to be Avelynn Varrok and that she's searching for her brother, Jay, who went missing in the tunnels within the Moon. Xira tracks the signal to the entrance to the Temple of Crota and sees a mysterious stranger on the cliff face behind her, who disappears before she can even wonder who it is. Xira and Avelynn fight through the Hive in the Temple and discover the Ghost inside, who then revives her Guardian. Jay wastes no time in immediately resuming his exploration, bringing the other two down into the Moon to search for a Hive library, the World's Grave. Within it lies millennia worth of information, including a plan to use a shard of the Traveler to drain it of its Light. As the Guardians rush to stop this ritual, Xira is contacted by the stranger, who tells her to face the Hive, though the answers she seeks are on Venus. The Guardians successfully prevent the ritual and free the shard, and Xira invites Avelynn and Jay back to the City with her, which they reluctantly accept.

She doesn't stay long at the Tower, however, soon heading back out on her own to meet the stranger on Venus, within the Ishtar Academy. There, she encounters the Vex, a hivemind of robotic entities that aim to turn all of existence into Vex, or exterminate it outright. The Exo Stranger tells her of the Black Heart residing within the Black Garden, the source of the Traveler’s weakened state, and tasks her with destroying it.

In order to find a way into the Black Garden, Xira enlists the help of Avelynn again in getting an audience with the Queen of the Reef, Mara Sov. The two of them hunt down an escapee from the Prison of Elders: Aksor, Archon Priest, in order to make themselves known to the Reef, and are repaid with meeting the Queen and her brother, Prince Uldren Sov. While Uldren is hostile to the Guardians, particularly Avelynn, Mara is willing to hear out Xira’s request for help, and she sends the two back to Venus, Xira in search of a Vex Gate Lord, Avelynn to hunt down the leader of the House of Winter, the ones responsible for the Prison’s break-in.

In Venus’s orbit, Xira contacts Spectre for help in finding a Gate Lord, with Spectre berating her for taking a deal with the Awoken Queen and getting herself mixed up in the Vex. Nevertheless, she and Xira head into the Ishtar Collective’s facilities in order to locate a Gate Lord within the Vex network. In the Endless Steps, Xira, Spectre, and Avelynn confront and destroy Zydron, Gate Lord, and take its head to return to the Reef. Uldren cuts out its eye, the key to the Black Garden, and gives the a set of coordinates on Mars, Meridian Bay, in the heart of Cabal territory.

At the Tower, as Xira’s looking into ways to bypass the Cabal’s Exclusion Zone, Nick suggests the help of Furnace-24, who’s experienced in Mars reconnaissance and in dealing with the Cabal. Xira and Furnace target one of the Cabal bunkers located outside the Zone to disable their Orbital Grid for a limited time, and are met with resistance from both the Cabal and Vex, who are defending the Vex Gate linked to the Black Garden. She and Furnace infiltrate a nearby outpost in order to disrupt their systems enough to let them pass, but meet heavy resistance once inside. To divide and thin out the Cabal’s forces, Furnace suggests they turn their attention to Freehold, a former human settlement now occupied by Cabal. Fighting their way into Clovis Bray facilities, the Guardians take out a Bracus of the Sand Eaters and reactivate a submind of the Warmind, now fully under Rasputin’s control. Furnace also brings in Nick for backup as they make their way through the Cabal in order to find the Vex Spire and charge the gate Lord’s eye near the Gate. Xira, likewise, contacts Spectre and the Varrok siblings, and the whole of Fireteam Phoenix convenes for the first time on Mars.

While Fireteam Silver deals with the Vex presence outside, Xira, Avelynn, and Nick head into the Gate to the Black Garden to take the fight to the Darkness itself. They’re able to navigate the Garden using routes the Vex take and follow the growing trail of Darkness until they find the Heart at its center. Fireteam Triad battles against the Sol Divisive and Sol Progeny, Vex who’ve turned to worshiping the Darkness as an entity outside of their control or understanding. The Black Heart rouses the Sol Progeny in defense, but the Guardians are victorious in destroying the Heart and allowing the Traveler to heal again. As the six-man team returns to the Tower, the Speaker congratulates them on saving the Traveler and the City. While most of the City’s Guardians celebrate their victory, Xira watches the City from the Tower hangar and is approached by the Exo stranger, who hands her the rifle that was on her back, saying that it was a gift from an old friend, and saying that the rest of her team is waiting for her in the Hall of Guardians before disappearing. Xira heads down into the Hall, where Xira is named fireteam leader by a unanimous vote, and she names them Fireteam Phoenix, for always being able to rise again in the Light.

The newly-formed team’s first official order of business is to deal with the surge of Vex on Venus following the destruction of the Black Heart, originating from the Vex structure known as the “Vault of Glass.” Xira is especially nervous about undertaking a Raid-level operation with such a new fireteam, but they all prove formidable in combat and are able to quickly pick up on and execute the mechanics that open the Vault and put an end to its overseers, the Templar and the Vex Mind known as Atheon, Time’s Conflux. With two threats to the Guardians now dealt with, the team properly celebrates down in the City.

Crota's Bane

Three months after Fireteam Phoenix was formed and ended the threat to the Traveler, a new face appears in the Tower: Eris Morn, the only survivor of a doomed fireteam that ventured into the Hellmouth to kill Crota, Son of Oryx. She warns those present, including Xira, about the encroaching Hive threat.

Xira and Avelynn work together in the Cosmodrome to locate and destroy a large presence of Hive underneath the surface, only to discover that the Hive have broken into a bunker of the Warmind Rasputin, led by the Wizard Omnigul, the Will of Crota. She escapes the Guardians, but they manage to kill enough Hive within to force the rest to retreat.

On the Moon at Eris’s behest, Xira heads down into the Temple of Crota to kill the Swarm Princes, generals of Crota’s army, and with them destroy the Sword used to cut down Guardians and sever their Light during the Great Disaster. Although the Darkness of the Sword has a familiar feeling to her, she’s nonetheless able to use it to end the Princes for good and destroy the Sword before it’s ever used again.

Back in the Cosmodrome, the Hive from the Seeder ship have begun to multiply and spread, so Xira, Nick, and Spectre head out to put a stop to the Broodmother.

From the fireteam’s combined efforts, Omnigul is forced out of hiding again and attempts to take control of the Cosmodrome and call for the Hive on the moon to begin their assault; she’s killed by the combined efforts of Xira, Avelynn, and Jay, but they're unable to stop the Hive from beginning their invasion of Earth.

Led by the voice and knowledge of Eris Morn, Xira and the Varrok siblings delve deep into the Moon to stop the Hive invasion and prevent Crota’s soul from reawakening. Although they prevent him from being physically reformed, Eris informs them that Crota’s soul still remains a vestige in his Throne World, and that every attempt to kill him will fail, unless they do it there.

Xira once again leads Fireteam Phoenix to go down into the darkness within the Hellmouth, battling Crota’s forces and ending Crota in his Throne World for good, becoming heroes of the City once more.

Lost to Time

The Taken War

The Red War

Appearance

Orange Exo with blue markings and light blue eyes wearing Warlock robes.
Xira's appearance in the Destiny 1 character creator.

Xira is a relatively tall Exo with a lithe hourglass figure; the metal parts of her body are mostly colored a matte orange, with some dark blue accent lines on her forehead, shoulders, and legs, while her fabric-like “skin” is a dark gray. On the sides of her head, she has pointed ear-like appendages that can move depending on her mood. After the events of the Red War, Xira has a number of scars on her body left over from her Lightless state: a couple of scars on the right side of her jaw and mouth, a laceration scar on her stomach, and a tear in the fabric near her right shoulder.

Xira’s armor is primarily blue with orange accents, and looks neat and put-together but rather plain. Off-duty, she prefers comfortable clothes with little patterns or flashy colors so they don’t clash with her body color. She has a very relaxed and simple style, and can occasionally be seen wearing headscarves with her outfits.

Personality

Xira-15 is, in a word, idealistic. She does what she does as a Guardian in the hopes of bringing about a better future for humanity, as well as a sense of duty in making sure her rebirth in the Light was not in vain. She's loyal and dependable to those she puts her trust in and has a magnetic sort of friendliness to her that has her forging bonds with even the unlikeliest of allies. She trusts in her team, her friends, above all else and trusts that such loyalty is reciprocated. She’s very good at improvising, something that has helped her both on the battlefield and off of it, as she often finds herself speaking for the team as a whole.

Xira has a love for engineering and is often looking for ways to improve on her ship and Sparrows that she’s fashioned herself. She takes pride in her work, but is also willing to learn how to improve. She has a fear of the dark stemming from her younger years, and thus doesn’t like venturing into dark and creepy places without at least one of her teammates by her side.

As much faith as she puts in the Traveler and the Light, however, Xira's also not afraid to question or push back against customs or rules that go against her personal morals when it suits her. She can be quite headstrong in this regard, butting heads with those who hold more value in tradition than perpetual progress. She doesn't like to let things of the past hold her down, and likewise she doesn't tend to let people's pasts define them in her eyes, being open to adjusting her own worldview and opinions of others if given the chance. At the same time, to those who blatantly push against her morals and seek to test her patience, she unrepentantly stands her ground.

Because her morality tends to be on the simplistic side, she is also confident in herself to the point of self-righteousness, considering an action to be the right thing to do simply because she believes it to be. She places a lot of value in her own opinions and emotions, although she remains firmly on the side of humanity and stands in defense of the Last City and its people. When it comes to people that she places her trust in, however, she is much more willing to take their points of view into consideration and values their opinions, even if they differ from her own.

Out of all the Phoenixes, Xira considers Avelynn to be her closest and most trusted partner, which is the reason why she was designated her number two. Xira always tries to be straightforward and honest with her, and can confide in her about the inner struggles that she faces without difficulty. The last thing she wants is for Avelynn to be endangered through her actions or words. Xira loves her wholeheartedly, and someday wants to live a quiet, peaceful, eternal life alongside her.

Xira doesn’t believe herself to be the “leader” of Fireteam Phoenix, despite her being the one bringing much of the group together initially and often being the frontrunner when it comes to new threats to the City. She places much more importance on team cohesion and camaraderie than the idea of a leader and their followers, as she trusts the other members to watch her back just as much as she watches theirs.

Since being thrust into the forefront of the City's efforts in driving back the Darkness from the solar system, Xira has the tendency to get lost in her work as a Guardian and let her own personal wellbeing fall to the wayside, as well as dealing with anxiety and control issues over sharing such a demanding burden, even with her own teammates at times. She also takes issue with just how revered she and her fireteam have become within the City, preferring to stay out of the public spotlight, particularly in regards to politics.
